“…It was not until I quite by accident attended Porgy and Bess at Washington’s National Opera in 2005 that I discovered that Gershwin had composed a masterpiece after all. Great operas are forgiven for their flaws. Well cast, acted and paced, Porgy and Bess overwhelmed my acquired reservations. When Gordon Hawkins, as Porgy, launched “Oh Bess, Oh Where’s my Bess?”, the works largesse, musical and dramatic, simply took over. My strongest impression, however, was of the culminating sequence beginning with “bring m’goat”…”
