Act two could stand alone as a masterpiece! Every time I perform the role of Scarpia, I can feel the music of his first entrance, and this power literally propels me across the stage.”

Tosca is a melodrama set in Rome in June 1800. Napoleons forces are threatening to overpower Rome, causing great concern in Naples. Baron Scarpia is dispatched to extinguish this insurrection and return order. Tensions and pressures grow with each passing hour, and time is of the essence.

“Gordon Hawkins is critically acclaimed throughout the world for his in-depth interpretations and lush baritone voice. As a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Music, he sang the various bel canto roles of Italian opera. Hawkins has an impressive number of title roles under his belt. Some of his lead roles include the title role of Nabucco and Macbeth, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Scarpia in Tosca, Amonasro in Aida, and many more. He’s won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was awarded the Washington National Opera Artist of the Year in 2006. Hawkins is also a Professor of Voice at Arizona State University.” Washington National Opera

Portland Opera will kick off its 2020-21 season with an opera gala. The concert will feature sopranos Vanessa Isiguen, Alexandra LoBianco, and Caitlin Lynch; mezzo-soprano Daryl Freedman; baritones Michael Chioldi, Gordon Hawkins, and Will Liverman; and bass-baritone Daniel Mobbs. Pianists include company Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor Nicholas Fox, as well as Cris Frisco, Steven McGhee, Joshua Quinn, and Carol Wong.
