“Gordon Hawkins is critically acclaimed throughout the world for his in-depth interpretations and lush baritone voice. As a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Music, he sang the various bel canto roles of Italian opera. Hawkins has an impressive number of title roles under his belt. Some of his lead roles include the title role of Nabucco and Macbeth, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Scarpia in Tosca, Amonasro in Aida, and many more. He’s won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was awarded the Washington National Opera Artist of the Year in 2006. Portland Opera will kick off its 2020-21 season with an opera gala. The concert will feature sopranos Vanessa Isiguen, Alexandra LoBianco, and Caitlin Lynch; mezzo-soprano Daryl Freedman; baritones Michael Chioldi, Gordon Hawkins, and Will Liverman; and bass-baritone Daniel Mobbs. Pianists include company Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor Nicholas Fox, as well as Cris Frisco, Steven McGhee, Joshua Quinn, and Carol Wong.
The “Blue” casts of The Glimmerglass Festival and Washington National Opera joined for a poignant musical offering from the Music Critics Association of North America’s Best New Opera of 2020.

The centerpiece of the 2020 Mostly Mozart Festival is a documentary about the opera Blue.
Hailed by The New York Times for its “elegant” libretto, “vibrant performance from an orchestra of nearly 50 players,” and “superb” cast the documentary will pair exclusive musical highlights from the opera’s debut at the 2019 Glimmerglass Festival, enriched by commentary from its creators, composer Jeanine Tesori and librettist/director Tazewell Thompson. Musicologist Naomi André will offer context and insight into Blue’s creation and enduring resonance.
Their voices will be interwoven and richly scored with music from the opera, bringing the story to life in an immersive narrative audio experience.
